I get positively (for a more accurate word – furiously) annoyed when faced with a terribly apathetic person. No kidding – although ‘apathy’ is pretty common and well-adapted among the people/community I’m surrounded by, it just gets on my much-worked-up nerves when certain idiots just “don’t feel like it”.
Of course, I tend to be apathetic when dealing with people drowning in apathy. There’s this mentality where, “I don’t mind your business, you don’t mind mine.” Like – a previous incident where a neighbour of mine couldn’t control her fierce dogs and screamed when her dogs starts fighting. It was in the evening and lots of neighbours were out jogging. I could count about 4 adults who jogged by my neighbour’s lawn with their noses high up and eyes purposely facing the other way.
There’s this incredible and rather pathetic habit of my countrymen on the road which is rather contradictory to our apathy. When there’s an accident or an event (funeral, wedding etc) on/beside a busy road, drivers would slow down their vehicles so they could watch the event as they drive by, VERY slowly. So much for apathy huh? I hate that. A LOT.
In my school, apathy is a common word in our dictionary. My schoolmates go by the rule that, “I know nothing, I see nothing, I don’t care.” Unless… there’s a reward. Yup – we don’t give a damn about anything if there’s no benefit on our side. If there isn’t a worthy prize in a competition, no one would bother to join. It’s not the matter of the clichéd saying, “It’s the process of everything that’s the fun part.” – it’s the common understanding that, “Why bother doing something when the result doesn’t benefit me at all?”
There’s also another sort of mentality, where someone thinks, “Gee… I just don’t feel like doing it… let’s just leave it aside.” Lots of people have this strong disinterest that they just push aside the things they don’t like, without trying at all.
I encountered that problem with my group project last week. See, to complete this particular project, my class had assigned groups of 4 to work together. My group was pretty efficient in different departments – we had a group leader to nag us, a person for grammar and spelling check, and another to go through the content/research materials. We thought things were going smooth… until the day we had to hand in our folio, which is also the last day before the deadline set by our teacher.
I was not able to attend school on that day due to (horror!) intense diarrhoea, but it’s not really an issue, since the last member of our group was the one in charge of printing each of our folios and instructed to bring them. Sadly, of course, said responsible person was absent from school as well, without notifying any of us at all. I heard the news until late afternoon that day, after receiving god-knows how many desperate phone calls from the other 2 very-desperate groupmates.
When I heard of it, I was definitely pissed off (the vomitting and exhaustion only aggravated my anger), not only because of the lack of responsibility, but the person’s apathy affected each and every one of us. Our teacher wasn’t going to accept our folios after that day, and yes, the allocated marks were ARE important for our government examinations. What more could be worse?
Later on, the previously-MIA culprit passed on news that she had food poisoning. Coincidence? I don’t really care – she may be twisting around in pain (like I was), but she should’ve realised the immense responsiblity she had in our folios, and at least DO something to make sure none of us were affected.
It may be just bad luck, or I may be paranoid, but I seriously hate people who just don’t care. That’s why people hate responsibility, or underestimate the importance when given a responsibility. And of course, it’s just rubbing more insult into injury when we’ve to clean up others’ ugly mess, when we’re not at fault.
Go to hell, apathy.

[ tashiichaan rants, and rants, when she's pissed off. Of course, she also minds her manners by ranting without any strong indication of offence/bitching towards any party. If she was careless, then she advises the person involved to speak up. Then again, you gotta remember tashiichaan is only a fickle-minded, neurotic teenager who sometimes doesn't know what she's saying. Okay she'll shut up now. ]
